Cemetery Symbols Website
While this blog is not exclusively for genealogists, I found it to be very helpful in explaining and illustrating (by photographs) many of the lesser-known symbols on tombstones and in cemeteries. It is called the Cemeteries and Cemetery Symbols website and can be found at http://cemeteries.wordpress.com/. Check it out. I found out about some organizations and customs I had not be aware of previously.

Florida Death Index on Ancestry
According to Ancestry Library Edition, this recently updated index, "... covers the death records in Florida from 1877 to 1998. Most records contain a name, race, death date, death place, gender, birth date, volume number, and certificate number. This collection of records was digitized from microfiche provided by The Florida Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics..."
In checking on several of my own ancestors, I found just name, gender, death date (month/yr) and death place. Most did not have images, nor did they give birth dates. However, it is still a great place to start if you are researching in Florida.

World War I Draft Registrations complete at Ancestry Library Edition
It looks like Ancestry Library Edition has completed work on the World War I Draft Registration Cards. According to their information, "these registration cards represent approximately 98% of the men under the age of 46" living in the United States at that time. Try this database to locate your male ancestors alive during the second decade of the Twentieth Century.

Ancestry Library Edition Searching
Several patrons have told me that the "new" Ancestry doesn't have as many databases as the old one had. When you look at the product's home page, you might be given that impression since it is cleaner and less cluttered than Ancestry Plus. However, if you click on the "Advanced Search" link, you'll see most of the familiar lists from the old Ancestry. While we've lost access to the historic City Directories, we've gained access to additional immigration records. Take a look!

Due to low patron usage, the decision was made not to renew this database for a second year. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our researchers.

Ancestry Plus becomes Ancestry Library Edition
As of August 31, Ancestry Plus will come under new management and will be changed to Ancestry Library Edition. Databases such as the City Directories and Genealogy & Biography Master Index will disappear, but will be replaced by Immigration and Passenger Lists. Look for other changes as well.
